Plan of Santiago reproduced from the original in A Summarie and True Discourse of SirFrancis Drake's West Indian Voyage in the Grenville Library in the British Museum. The plan shows the English fleet at anchor before the town; Drake's ship, the 'Elizabeth Bonaventure' of 600 tons, distinguishable by the admiral's flag, the Cross of St. George, flown on the main mast, is shown in the foreground. : In fact since Santiago is not on the sea this must be Valparaiso, the first major port in Chile after rounding Cape Horn, and the most used port in that part of the pacific ocean. It use declined drastically when the Panama canal was built. The hills in this picture are today populated and give the city its characteristic flavour, with ascenores or funiculars from the port level to the residential areas above 固opFoto
