29 year old James Meredith an ex-air force sergeant pictured as he registers at the University of Mississippi becoming the first negro student in the otherwise all-white University . Watching the procedure is University registrar Rober Ellis . Meredith's enrollment caused serious clashes between federal marshals and rioting students . Two men were shot dead and about 75 others injured whengas masked Marshals went into action with tear gas against the rioting students. 2nd October 1962
