This is a rare photograph showing amateur photography in Rochester in the 1890s. It was taken by Walter Mudge. Philip G Mumford is shown taking a snapshot of W W Bush (left) and John F Bush (right), 14 Eastview Terrace, Pittsford, at the boat landing near Driving Park Avenue on the west bank of the Genesee River. The photograph is a gift of John F Bush to the Eastman historical photographic collection. The camera is one of the first model Kodak cameras marketed in 1888. It did not have the conventional reflecting view finder. The photographer sighted across the top of the camera and centred his subject between the ends of a "V" scored on the top of the box. Scenes like this took place all over the country in the 1890s, when hand cameras, roll films and photofinishing made it possible for anybody to take snapshots. Pictures of these early amateurs using their cameras are rare. This illustration is on display at George Eastman House, the photographic institute in Rochester, as part of the exhibition showing development of amateur roll film cameras. 24th June 1888
