On 9th July 1944 British and Canadian troops captured Caen after a massive assault from air, sea and land following the 6th June allied invasion. Here, British troops, giving the thumbs-up sign, are seen with some of the local inhabitants who stayed on in the town during the bitter fighting. The troops seen here were some of the first allied soldiers to enter the town.
