Evacuation of Dunkirk. In May 1940, after the Belgian resistance to the German invasion collapsed, the British Expeditionary Force was lifted from Dunkirk. Between 26th May and 4th June, 335,000 British and French troops were taken off the beaches by thousands of small British boats and warships, and transported to England under heavy air and artillery bombardment.
