The 'Butcher of Crete' faces the firing squad. Fritz Schubert, better known as the 'Butcher of Crete' has been executed in the Salonica prisons after his request for clemency was rejected by King Paul. Schubert, a corporal in the Webremacht Occupation Forces, was responsible for the burning of scores of villages, hundreds of murders and mass deportations to Germany's death camps. One of his jobs was to recruit Greek traitors, whom he chose from among life-sentenced criminals by releasing them and promising impunity. His last words were - 'Germany will become strong one day and pay back for my life'.
