POLICE OPEN FIRE ON RIOTERS . Five churches burned down . Police and communists clashes in the streets, several killings and many woundings have been the results of extensive political rioting in Madrid . Churches and newspapers offices were set on fire by rioters and when police intervened during a demonstration round a burning church in the heart of the capital Communists and officers battled with revolvers over the blazing ruins . Cars were stopped and the petrol commandeered to pour over the blazing churches . Fierce fighting followed the funeral of a police officer killed by fascists during an attempt to assassinate the Socialist leader Jimenez de Asua .
