Khe Sanh , South Vietnam : The last Marines pulled out of their outpost at Khe Sanh under harassing Communist sniper fire . Here a bulldozer smashes some of the fortifications that only months ago helped the Marines withstand a 77 day North Vietnamese siege . The US Marine contingent abandoned Khe Sanh to adopt a more " mobile " role in the defence of South Vietnam's northern provinces . 6 July 1968
