An unarmed Unite States navy plane , a propeller-driven A-1 Skyraider has been shot down by Communist Chinese five miles off Hainan Island , US sources disclosed. Two planes of the same type are pictured . The Pentagon said the downed plane was one of two such aircraft which experienced " navigational difficulties and indadvertently strayed " within 5 miles of the island . 15 February 1968
