Official final placings in the 24-hour sports car race were in No 2 Ford , Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon of New Zealand , shown here crossing the finishing line . Roy Lunn , British designer of the winning Fords said , " We tried to make it a dead heat and we forgot about the starting position rule , The McLaren car officially won by 20 metres (60 ft) because that was the distance which separated it from the No 1 car on the starting grid " . The winner officially average 201.795 kmph for the whole disatance , the first time the 200 km mark had ever been broken . 19 June 1966
