Gingberg said ' we may not be able to turn on with the ' pot ' ( Marijuana ) , but at least we can turn on with a chant . The meeting was a kind of ' flower power ' demonstration or loving protest to generally aimed at getting the smoking of ' pot ' legalised . Some hippies pelted icy calm police with flowers, yelling ' we love you , we love you ' . Passing tourists were puzzled to find themselves being photographed by the hippies who took great interest in the ' straight people ' as hippies call anyone who looks and behaves normally . 16 July , 1967 .
