Meteor top 620 mph in first trial flight. Squadron Leader W A Waterton, second pilot for the impending attack on the world speed record, took up the E E 550 Gloster Meteor from Tangmere, Sussex, this morning (Friday) on its first 12. During his half hours flight. He attained a true air speed in excess of 620 mph. On landing, he went into conference of Rolls-Royce and Gloster experts to discuss the aircraft performance. If this morning's flight has shown the E E 550 to be in trim for the record, big, the both machines to be used to the attempt a ready to go. Weather experts, however, do not anticipate Fogle conditions before next Monday. But the shows, groundcrew watching the E E 550 at speed over Tangmere Aerodrome, Sussex, this morning (Friday). 16 August 1946
