Eight of the 14 coaches which will comprise the "White Train", to be used by their majesties and the Princess during their tour of South Africa next year, have been completed at the Metro-Cammell works at Birmingham. Five of these coaches are saloons of special designed to accommodate the King and Queen, the princesses, Royal household staff, and South African Government Ministers and staff. The coaches are fully air-conditioned, fitted throughout with safety glass, and will afford almost silent travel. Picture shows: The Royal lounge of the "White Train" handled and furnished in English walnut and Sycamore. The predominant colour of the room is a medium blue, silver and gold as secondary colours. Telephone, radio ground and record cabinet are included. A handmade carpet covers the floor, and the full windows are curtains and art self with matching pelmets. 24 November 1946
