Concern for Ennerdale and its lake. Controversy has arisen over the opposition offered by friends of the Lake District to a proposal to raise the level of Ennerdale Lake, Cumberland to secure an additional water supply for industrial and domestic purposes. The criticism is based on the fact that raising the water level will flood farmland and the famous Anglers Inn, spoiling the landscape and sacrificing part of the national park to industry. But the new industry that Courtaulds proposed to set up at Sellafield at the mouth of the river Ehen flying out of Ennerdale, will need 6,000,000 gallons of water a day and Whitehaven and Seascale will require a heavy supplies from malaise. The new industry will give permanent employment to people idle in the district to the war, and will bring prosperity to West Cumberland. Mr JJ Adams, Regional Controller under the Board of Trade, stated 'anything we have done has been in agreement with the National planning authorities. The National trust has no objection to offer'.
