Striding to his destiny. For 38 of 57 years, new British Prime Minister Anthony Eden has walked in, dedicated service to the Crown, a job he was born and bred to fill. In 1923, the handsome moustachioed Eden stepped into a Tory seat in Parliament and has held it for 30 years, 12, which were as a Cabinet minister. Promoted to Foreign Minister of 38, Eden became the Homburg hatted glamour boy of European diplomatic circles (top left). As World War II approached, Eden's disagreement 'in appeasement'of Hitler prompted his resignation from the Neville Chamberlain Cabinet, and he returned to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps as a major (top centre). With Winston Churchill at the head of the government, even return to court dress (top right) and the Foreign Secretaryship. The trials of World War II brought even hurrying many times to 10 Downing Street (lower left), where he and Churchill worked to bring Britain and the world through some of history's darkest days. The post-war Churchill government fell to the laborites, but its return to power brought Eden into new stature as the ageing Churchills designated heir apparent. Then began a long period of hands in pocket waiting (bottom centre) for the time when even would take the mantle of the nation's highest office. Churchill's reluctant to relinquish the post, and the fear that his divorce from his first wife might bar him from the Prime Ministership, but many streets of grey in Eden's hair and moustache. Finally this week, Sir Winston stepped down, and Sir Anthony was summoned from Carlton house (bottom right) to kiss the Queens hand and take the job. He had long waited to fill-one he is well able to hold, though he is one of the world's youngest government leaders. 9 April 1955
