Historic meeting - Tashkent Soviet Russian Premier , Alexei Kosygin (right) with Indian Premier Lal Bahudur Shastri (left) and President Ayub Khan of Pakistan . Shastri and Khan shook hands when they met this morning at a private meeting , which took place five hours before they were to open a formal summit conference aimed at seeking peace over Kashmir . The informal meeting was arranged by Mr Kosygin and was held in "Durman" , the latter's Government villa on the outskirts of Tashkent . The trio talked privately for forty minutes , discussing arrangements for the conference , and then posed for photographers . 4 January 1966
