Clinical and university lecturer; his most famous patient was Vittorio Emanuele II; which experimentally administered oxygen at the end of the lung disease that; after a temporary improvement; however; led him to death. Its innovative contribution gave a turn; among other things; to treat malaria and cardiovascular disease. As Minister of Education with a derogation to the Directorate General of Antiquities and Fine Arts; promoted a reform of public schools; the construction of the Policlinico Umberto I and the enhancement of the urban area of ​​monumental ancient Rome.
