19th century illustration of fossilized foraminifera (forams for short). Forams are single-celled protists with shells. Their shells are also referred to as tests because in some forms the protoplasm covers the exterior of the shell. These shells are commonly made of calcium carbonate. Forams are laid down in geological strata in large quantities to form chalk cliffs.
