Cape Tenaron lighthouse sits at the southern-most point of the Peloponnese in Greece. It overlooks a busy seaway for east-west Mediterranean shipping. The remains of the ancient city of Tenarus can still be seen today. Nearby is a cave said to be an important entrance to Hades, god of the dead, above which is a temple to the sea god Poseidon that was later converted into a Christian church. The area is also know as Cape Matapan and was the arena for a major sea battle in 1941 between the British and Italian navies. The lighthouse continues to be manned by the Greek navy.
