Light micrograph of amoxicillin (INN) crystals. Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic cell envelope antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall (the cross-linkage between the linear peptidoglycan polymer chains). This important chemical compound in human and veterinary health is one of the most frequently prescribed medications for the treatment of infections of the throat, ear and nose, the genitourinary tract, the skin and skin structure, and the lower respiratory tract. Amoxicillin is commonly prescribed with clavulanic acid (a 帣-lactamase inhibitor), as it is susceptible to degradation by 帣-lactamase-producing bacteria.
