Marie-Anne de Mailly-Nesles (1717-1744) Marquise de la Tournelle; Duchess of CHATEAUROUX. Widow of the Marquis de la Tournelle to the age of 23; reached at court her sisters and how they agreed; when the king became infatuated with her; after having contracted conditions; to become the favorite of Louis XV. At court it soon became quite powerful; making many enemies because of his fiery behavior; ambitious and standards of living extravagantly gorgeous. Having convinced the king to command himself his armies in the War of Austrian Succession; against the advice of the royal family; she accompanied him to Metz; but the King fell ill and returned to Paris in 1744; after having dismissed for reasons of convenience. Humiliated and angry; she had to leave it; but as soon as he recovered and called her back to court; while flocked meditating vengeance; was himself seized with sudden illness; and died before he could see again. Representation inspired by the portrait painted by Jean-Marc Nattier. Colored lithograph; nineteenth century France
