Inspecting meat at Smithfield Market, City of London, c1903 (1903). Smithfield market was established by the 1860 Metropolitan Meat and Poultry Market Act, which formalised the meat market that occupied the site for over 800 years. A livestock market occupied the site as early as the 10th century. The market building was designed by Horace Jones (1819-1887). From Living London, Vol. III, by George R. Sims. [Cassell and Company, Limited, London, Paris, New York & Melbourne, 1903]. (Colorised black and white print).
