Light micrograph of lysine crystals. This is an essential amino acid supplied by many foods, especially red meats, fish, wheat germ, and dairy products. Through its post-translational modifications (acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitination, carboxylation, biotinylation, and sumoylation), lysine is involved in many cellular processes like protein, enzyme, antibody, and hormone synthesis, as well as calcium absorption. It is a dietary supplement and food additive, and is added to animal feed. Lysine is useful in therapy for marasmus, osteoporosis, and herpes simplex. It has anti-proliferative effects in adult T-cell leukemia. A lysine deficiency may result in retarded growth, hair loss, anemia, immunodeficiency, and reproductive problems. It is also associated with Alzheimer's disease, cystinuria and schizophrenia. Field of view size: 1.49 x 2.23 mm (0.059 x 0.088 in)
