Engraving depicting Pulvermacher's chain: the patient would hold the handles of the zinc/copper/zinc chain, each link of which was wound round wood. The chain was plunged in vinegar which the wood absorbed: chemical action caused a current and the circuit was completed by the body. Dated 19th century.
