Earthworm (Lumbricus sp.), Its saddle, or clitellum, which secretes an egg-containing cocoon, is at upper left. The earthworm's diet mainly consists of organic substances in the soil, and its movement helps to break up the soil and improve its aeration. Earthworms are therefore vital to maintaining the quality of arable soils.
