Owl Butterfly (Caligo eurilochus) with extended proboscis, drinking from a banana. The proboscis, or tongue, is made up of two halves of a cylinder that fasten together once the butterfly has emerged from its pupa. The proboscis can be coiled and uncoiled by the action of muscles and is used to draw up liquid nutrients.
