Northern saw-whet owl (Aegolius acadicus) is the smallest owl in the east, standing only eight inches tall. The northern saw-whet owls eat mostly deer mice but also like to consume house mice, voles and small birds. They nest almost exclusively in woodpecker holes and are only vocal during breeding season.
