Close-up of head of the Cicada Killer Wasp. The cicada killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus) is one of the largest wasps in North America with adult females reaching a size of almost two inches. This wasp will catch and paralyze a cicada with its stinger. It will then lay an egg in the paralyzed cicada and bury it. The new wasp will emerge the following summer.
