The Texas prickly poppy is one of several species of Argemone found in the semi-arid regions of the US. Like many species of poppies, this plant contains strong toxic alkaloids that repel grazing animals but have been used medicinally by Native Americans. As seen here, the flowers are heavily visited by species of Halictrid bees. The iridescent green bee is of the genus Augochlora. Photo taken in Coke Co., TX.
