A Harlequin toad (Atelopus zeteki) from Panama, locally known as the "rana dorada," or golden frog. This species is critically endangered, and has disappeared from all but a handful of the localities where it was once abundant. One of the key problems these toads face is the introduction of trout into the streams where they breed. Trout are fond of preying on their tadpoles. In addition, chytridiomycosis, a fungal infection devastating amphibian populations around the world, has wiped out many species of Atelopus. This species is currently being bred in captivity with intent for future release back into the wild.
