Red-eared Sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans), like many turtles, frequently bask in the sun. Exposure to ultra-violet light is essential for the turtles to properly metabolize calcium. These turtles are native to North America east of the rockies. They have been introduced widely around the world and are now common in the UK and other areas.
