Gigantocypris agassizii, a giant ostracod, is a deep water seed shrimp. It eats copepods and other small invertebrates. The complex eyes of this crustacean can detect the bioluminescence from their copepod prey items. They are found as deep as 1300 meters. This individual was trawled to the surface in Monterey, California, 2007.
