The giant earthworm (Megascolides australis) lives in only one corner of Australia, the wet river slopes of Southern Gippsland in the State of Victoria, and reaches lengths from 6 feet to 12 feet. This picture shows how the elusive giant earthworm is captured. It breaks easily if an attempt is made to pull it from its burrow, so searchers tie a knot in it to stop it from escaping down the burrow while the rest of it is dug out.
