Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides) butterfly at Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory, South Deerfield, MA. Amazon natives regarded these blue butterflies as part of the sky falling down to earth, a sign that great suffering would soon come to them. The brilliant blue color is not created by a pigment, but by the selective reflection of blue light off ridged scales on the wings. The intensity of blue varies with the amount of sunlight striking the wing surface. As they are entirely fruit feeders, Blue Morphos are often seen with Owl butterflies at fruit feeding stations in conservatories. The caterpillars feed on members of the pea family (Leguminosea). They are protected by an eversible gland which gives off a volatile odor when the caterpillar is disturbed by a predator.
