Io moth (Automeris io) female on moss. This species exhibits dimorphism. The females are predominantly reddish, rust or orange, and the males are smaller and mostly yellow. This species is found throughout most of the US and Canada, west of the Rockies. Normally the female rests with the wings covering the eyespots. The wings are flashed forward in a display that is quite effective in startling predators like birds or small mammals. This female was photographed in the Tuscarora State Forest in Pennsylvania in June.
