Promethea Moth (Callosamia promethea) caterpillar in 5th instar on Spicebush (Lindera benzoin). Macro photograph showing the thoracic legs and various facial features including mouthparts. This species ranges throughout the eastern US. The caterpillars feed on a number of different foodplants with Spicebush, Sassafras and Wild Cherry being among the favorites. But Ash, Witch Hazel, Red Maple, Sweetgum, Winterberry Holly among others that are utilized. This 5th instar caterpillar was photographed in situ at Windolph Landing Preserve in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, July.
