Culicine mosquito pupa. At the end of the abdomen is a breathing siphon that ends in a spiracle. This is held out of the water to allow the larva to breathe. The mosquito's larval stage lasts for between 1 to 2 weeks. During this time the larva lives underwater, feeding on algae and detritus. Photographed in Upstate New York in the summer. Culicine mosquitoes include a number of species that act as disease vectors.
