Convergent Ladybird Beetles (Hippodamia convergens) clustered on a log in Los Padres National Forest, Santa Barbara County, California. The beetles group together during winter months to hibernate in large aggregations in mountain valleys, far from their aphid food sources. In spring the beetles spread out in search of aphids and suitable locations for egg laying.
