Oak apples, the galls of the small wasp Andricus californicus, on a valley oak stem. These conspicuous galls are among the largest of the oak galls. Within the gall the larval wasp feeds and develops in safety, burrowing out thru a small hole that it makes when mature. Photo taken near Bend, Oregon.
