Flagtail killifish, Aphyolebias schleseri; male below. This recently-described species belongs to that group of killies referred to as annuals. Annual killies live in temporary bodies of water, laying their eggs in the muddy substrate as the ponds begin to dry. The eggs hatch in 4 - 10 months when rainy season storms refill the ponds. Known range of this species is the Peruvian Amazon, within department of Loreto. Photo of wild caught fish.
