Isopods are crustaceans that are related to shrimp and crabs. Isopods of the genus Caecidotea can be common in subterranean waters in North America. In some systems they constitute a significant portion of the total biomass present. The Christian School Cave Isopod, Caecidotea mackini, is only known from a single cave in NE Oklahoma. It is an obligate groundwater inhabitant and serves as an important member of the food web in the subterranean system where it is found.
