Aurora borealis in the skies over New Jersey. Also called the Northern Lights, these displays are the result of charged particles from the solar wind interacting with the earth's magnetic field. Though generally associated with the polar regions, these displays are less often visible at lower latitudes. The companion phenomenon in the south (the Southern Lights) is termed the aurora australis. A silhouetted telescope is visible in the foreground.
