Brachiopods are sessile marine invertebrates which have a bivalve shell and bear a number of ciliated tentacles around the mouth. The shell resembles that of a bivalve mollusc but the structure of the body is quite different and the animals are placed in a separate phylum, the Brachiopoda. Brachiopods were very common in Paleozoic and Mesozoic times, but only a few species survive today.
