The plume of smoke from the explosion of an offshore oil rig is visible in this satellite photograph (lower right). The oil leak began when the oil rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and and then sank. Of its crew of 126, 11 are missing and presumed dead. The rig was owned by Transocean Ltd. and operated by BP, which is responsible for the cleanup. This image of the Gulf Coast and near-shore waters was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite on April 21. The event occurred on April 20th, 2010.
