A composite image based on NASA satellite views of Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano eruption of 2014. The active stratovolcano, the second-highest mountain in Iceland, is located under Vatnajokull, Iceland's most extensive glacier. Increasing seismic activity over seven years preceded the initial eruption of the volcano on August 23. In this image can be seen a kilometer-long fissure and lava flowing in channels. North is at the top of the image. The front of the lava flow moves toward the northeast while a smoke plume blows toward the west. The Vatnajokull ice cap can be seen to the south of the eruption.
