Color enhanced illustration of an Oligocene landscape. The third oldest of the seven geological epochs of the Cenozoic Era. It corresponds to an interval of geological time (and rocks deposited during that time) from the close of the Eocene Epoch to the beginning of the Miocene Epoch. The most recent geological time scales assign an age of 34 to 24 million years ago. The Oligocene is often considered an important time of transition, a link between the archaic world of the tropical Eocene and the more modern ecosystems of the Miocene. Major changes during the Oligocene included a global expansion of grasslands, and a regression of tropical broad leaf forests to the equatorial belt. Illustration originally captioned: Oligocene landscape by E.P. Buckwall. 1916. This image has been color enhanced.
