Lalibela: monolithic churches, excavated from the living rock (inside and outside) in the shape of built-up architecture, in the Ethiopian highlands. Attributed to a Zagwe-King, Lalibela, but, insofar as written documents are lacking, still shrouded in the fogs of legend. About 1200 AD. One of the most stunning achievements in ecclesiastical building. A World Heritage site. The image shows Beta Giyorgis (House of St. George).
