This burial ground, an eerie plot of land in the Josefov area of Prague, was once in the Jewish ghetto. The oldest tombstone dates from 1439 and marks the grave of poet and scholar Avigdor Karo. Burials continued until 1787. Today there are 12,000 tombstones, although many more are buried here, as people were buried layer on top of layer. The raising of buried tombstones to the surface makes for an unforgettable visual impression. The tombstones are in all manner of positions. (There seemed to be an inordinate amount of crows about.).
