The World Heritage site of Kerkouane is located on the Cap Bon peninsula in Tunisia. Of Phoenician origin, it was a village of fishermen and dyers; the main export was Tyrian purple, a dye produced from murex shells. Kerkouane was destroyed by Rome during the Third Punic War (149-146 BC) but never rebuilt. As a result, its remains reflect a purely Punic town with no Roman interference. Of particular note are its sewer systems and facilities for extracting Tyrian purple.
