The keyboard is used because dyslexics cannot form letters. Such instruction is typical of the Orton-Gillingham Approach which is language-based, multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible. "Sight words" are that cannot be "sounded out" by a dyslexic because certain letters do not make a usual sound.
